Summer Fair Fun (if you can call what we had summer)

There was probably a total of two weeks of weather that could actually be categorized as summer. And this is what I did on two of those days:

Got my tractor on at the fair.

Ate some blue cotton candy (as well as 5 ice creams--over two trips to the fair--and curly fries).

Saved a cowboy and rode a horse, er, pony. (Hi, Franky!)

Got this far into the bungee jump and then decided it wasn't for me. Maybe next year.

Go pig with the orange number blanket! Whatever your name is. It doesn't matter because I'm rooting for orange!

(Fair: day two) Sleep-eating ice cream. And you thought it couldn't be done. Shame on you for doubting me.

Hope your summer was just as fun as these two days of mine!

Yesterday, Zachy went with Auntie and Susan to a magical place called Mount Vernon. Every Spring the barren-looking fields suddenly and myseriously burst with a wide array of colors.

Sometimes there's an oddly shaped tree growing amidst the bursts of color.

Strangely, in the most intensely hued areas the color of the flowers will rub off on the person standing (or sitting, in this case) closest.

At the end of the tour, after falling under the magical color spell, you can take a few of the bright, beautiful orbs home and hope the magic of Spring and sunshine follows along with you.

Awesome pjs with glow-in-the-dark planets, stars, and moons. Zachy's trick to making them glow is to shine his flashlight on them and then go into the dark closet. He gets so excited and wants to show everyone!

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010

Grandma and Grandpa invited us to their house to play in the snow. The Holmes’ family went too.Zachy had fun until the snow flew into his face, or he fell and his hands got wet. He should have kept his mittens on! We had good times trying out all the different sleds, most of them were 20 years old… Zachary’s favorite part was wearing his red snow boots. The neighborhood had a little sledding hill that we experienced. Jim went down from the steep top, launched off the jump, and landed on a broken sled covered in snow. The rest of us started from below the jump for a nice, easy ride.

Our Christmas Eve Chinese dinner was home made pan fried noodles. Zachy loves noodles! Zachy loves his new red snow boots! He says “shoes” and “boots” now! We love the easy, wide, double velcro opening to get feet and pants in. Rainey gave Zachy the old school Fisher Price push popper. He loves it, she hates it.Zachy finally understands the excitement and goal of opening presents. What kind of wonderful toy could it be? He always hopes for a ball… Grandpa loves his Zachary. It’s mutual I’m sure. Auntie gave Zachy super smart Scout. He’s a LeapFrog doggie that can be programmed to Zachary’s likes. Scout and Zachary like noodles, ducks, and the color red. Elena gave Zachy some tools. The ones that make noises are the best!The foam building blocks were a huge hit! Everyone got into the building frenzy!

Santa brought Zachy a remote control car for Christmas. We think he shops at Costco…

Trains, trains, trains

Zachy loves the train play station at the children’s museum. He says “choo choo” for train. Second favorite: balls! Putting them in the air tubes, collecting them after they pop out, and putting them in the air tubes again. Elena needs a lot of money so Zachy lends a hand.Third favorite activity: water. He really wishes he could climb in and splash around. If he could it would be his most favorite place in the museum :-)

One and a half years old and still not sleeping in his crib. Why oh why couldn’t you be a self soother?!? By the way, Zachy loves this Cars blanket from Aunt Sarah, Uncle Greg, and his three cousins. We sang Happy Birthday just for Zachary’s amusement. It makes him smile. Crafty Elena made the candlestick holders in her Woodworking with hand tools class. Love that class and the amazing things she comes home with – bird feeder, mailbox, garden signs, spinning top, and nametag necklace to name a few.Zachary had a successful 18 month visit at the pediatricians. They were impressed that he hadn’t been sick with any colds or fevers and glad that he had added some more words to his vocabulary. He says hat, calls Santa ho-ho, recognizes kitty, says up and down, and uh-uh for just about everything else :-) He finally said Mama after saying Dada and Sissy (Elena) for over a month.

Zachy measured 32 3/8” tall (55%), 24lbs 4oz (30% and just over a half pound increase from September), and head circumference of 19” (60%). H1N1 was in stock so he got that vaccination and will have to return in 4 weeks to get the 2nd dose.

Zachy’s skinny waist is making it hard to find pants that fit in the waist. Adjustable waists don’t show up until size 2T and he is too short for those. We are having better luck with Crazy 8 and Gap than with the Gymboree pants. If you know of any better brands, let us know! We don’t like baby plumber butt at all!

Smearing the wall with holiday spirit

Elena let Zachary help put ornaments on the tree this year. But none of her ornaments, and only ones that couldn’t be broken. He preferred helping get them out of the box to hanging them on the tree. Zachy is full into the climbing stage. Every piece of furniture is a mountain waiting to be concurred over, and over, and over again. Zachy is playing follow the kitty. They went around the tree… Then under the table. Helping Mommy decorate with Christmas chains, artwork by Elena, and Santa pictures dating back to 1978! Every time the ladder was vacant he climbed right up! No fear in that guy and no desire to get down.

Daddy is much more efficient at opening presents than Zachary. Ooh, Daddy’s presents are cool too! Zachy’s favorite present was the cash register. It was probably Tate’s favorite too… Put the money in, push the button, swing the handle, and “ding!” Nana has all sorts of furniture for her stuffed bears. Zachy finds a seat that is “just right.” All those matching pajamas, who can tell the kids apart?Zachy likes milk now! He drinks bottle after bottle of whole milk. Not a big fan of the sippy cup or milk through a straw, but he is officially weaned. Hooray!

Indoor Water Park

We went to the Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound and stayed one night. Zachy was so excited to put his swimsuit on when we arrived! He loved every bit of the water park. He was too little for the waterslides, so he had to drool over them from a distance. Zachy liked walking through the shallow areas. None of the pools we regularly go to have water as shallow as 6”. Riding on the jet skis was fun! Squirting people with water was a bonus! Getting splashed in return. Elena was nice enough to take him down the little slides a few times. He also went down by himself. Getting a workout bobbing in the water. “I never want to leave Great Wolf Lodge!” So happy to be in the water! Time just flew by and before we knew it, we were tired and ready for a nap in the car.

Jim’s work had a casino themed holiday party and we dressed to the nines and hit the town! We learned that we clean up pretty sharp and that craps is fun to play!

The kids stayed home and got spoiled by Auntie. Popcorn, late bedtime, non-stop movie fest… Aunties are great!

We really didn’t think Zachy would be a Santa-lap-crier. It really isn’t his personality. But he was really, really tired when we went to see him. Hopefully next year will be tear free!He was so tired he fell asleep in the car on the way home… With a lollipop in his mouth… We sure are getting a lot of lollipop pictures lately… Our Christmas card! We had Thanksgiving dinner at Walt & Terry’s house. As usual, there was too much food… We had pineapple casserole, twice baked potato casserole, turkey, stuffing, sweet potato hash, and pumpkin tart for dessert.

Zachy liked the turkey bones the best!

Zachy was a big helper to Terry and helped clear the table and load the dishwasher.

Swim lessons

The YMCA offers parent-tot swim lessons, so we signed up for a session. Zachy loves every single day he gets to go in the pool. His favorite part was climbing out and jumping in, and playing with the balls. His teacher, Miss Sherri, had an Elmo swim doll. Zachy looked forward to seeing him every week. We aren’t going to sign up for another session yet, but we will go to open swim at the YMCA regularly with Elena.

Trick-Or-Treat!

Zachy was anxious to start trick-or-treating and eat some candy. Jim’s octopus costume. His group didn’t do a theme this year. Zachy is appeased by the blue lollipop. He calls them pops. He understands chocolate and candy, but won’t say the words. When he wants an MnM, he gets a big smile and says, “Emmm!” The lollipop destroyed the costume. After salvaging the little animal figures, it went straight into the trash. Rolling around on the carpet didn’t help the tornado’s lifespan either… Everyone thought Zachy was adorable and loved his costume. Zachy fell in love with drinking fountains. Pushing the button to get the water to jump out at you, then trying to catch the water in your mouth, oh such fun for a 15 month old! Jim found it amusing too. Reaching for the candy on Daddy’s desk. Drowning in the tornado, but that doesn’t slow down the quest for sugar!Since the tornado was in the trash and Zachy needed more candy, we had to squeeze him into last year’s bat costume. Just a little short in the sleeves and pant legs, no big deal.C’mon, let’s go get candy!

at The Farm

Elena’s class had a field trip to pumpkin patch. It was cold and wet, but we still got our pumpkins. Zachy liked the animals the most. There were ducks, bunnies, goats, sheep, pigs, and kitties. Choose that one! It’s close to the tractor and not too muddy! The tractor ride out to the pumpkin field was chilly! We huddled together to keep as warm as we could. Zachy fell in the mud a few times and fell out of his boots a few more times. We changed clothes before heading home…

What a terror of a tornado!

Zachy’s tornado costume turned out super cute with little animals and trees sewn in, but he only wore it half of the time. Zachy loved the disappearing ghost poop activity. Probably because it involved playing in the water…His favorite part of the haunted house was the mommy mummy and baby mummy. Helping Maddie (er, Little Red Riding Hood) make a floam monster!Zachy also spent a lot of time at the bug box station because it was all candy, candy, candy.

Zachy thinks they are balls, but he’ll learn that they are pumpkins before October is over!Zachy did find a pumpkin that was big enough to be manly, yet small enough that he could lift it. This is just as much fun as mushrooming! Daddy had to help break the pumpkin off the vine. Pumpkin patches are full of things to trip over… Zachy even lost a shoe for a little bit. Zachy helps lift the pumpkin up to take it to the wheelbarrow.Too bad there isn’t room in the wheelbarrow for little kids (or moms) to ride in…

Bob’s Corn has the best kettle corn, hands down! Definitely a reason to return next year.

Zachy is 15 months old!

Zachy is 32” tall (75%), weighs 23lbs 8oz (40%) and has a head circumference of 18 3/4” (70%). He really needs to pack on some weight so his pants won’t keep falling off…

He’s a great eater (especially fruit) and has about 10 words. His motor skills are fantastic – running, jumping, throwing, coloring, etc. He prefers nursing to cow’s milk, but hopefully that will change by the end of the year.

We love you Zachy! Keep growing strong!

First, check out the scene. Second, head straight for the water. It is always the most fun. Third, splash, splash, and splash some more. It’s ok because Mommy always packs extra clothes. Uh-oh, distracted by a bird! At least this one was alive… Zachy loved pulling this bull kelp along the beach. Ok, taking the wet clothes off seemed like a good idea, but wearing only a diaper in the sand? It was everywhere! Hey guys! The next day we were smarter and kept him in the clothes no matter how wet or sandy they got.Zachy loved every minute on the beach, hopefully we can go next September too.

Evergreen State Fair in Monroe

Zachy went to the fair and saw all the animals!He liked the chickens, ducks, fish, pigs, goats, and cows. Grandpa came too! And Grandma, and Auntie, and Lisa, and Maria, and Erin. Plus Mommy and Elena of course. Ducks! If only we were allowed to feed them or take them swimming… He was not enthusiastic about riding this tractor. He probably thought it was too small. All that animal viewing makes for an exhausting day!

What can we use for finger-painting that washes out easily? Pudding! We mixed the pudding, added color, and started painting. Zachy took a taste. We only had lemon pudding in the house for this project. Next time we’ll make sure to get vanilla. Or chocolate just because it tastes the best! Zachary had a better time with the paper gone and just squishing the pudding on the tray.

Zachy’s favorite exhibit at the zoo was the Willawong Station where he could feed the birds. He liked both the birds in the trees and the birds on the ground. All were fascinating!He liked these wolf cubs too. He called them kitties :-) Zachy also liked running along the paths and hiding in the bushes. Sneaky little guy got startled by squirrels a couple of times.He really wanted this tractor to go somewhere, but couldn’t get it started.

Grandma’s house in the summer

The groundhog sees his shadow… Playing broomball on the back patio. Grandpa spoils his grandkids with big bowls of cut melon. Zachy is fascinated by the pinwheels! If they aren’t spinning on their own, he’ll help them along. Then he’ll move them from one spot in the yard to another. And later throw them in the pool.Time to cool off! This is more fun than the bathtub!Getting compliments on his fancy necklace.

A little boy’s dream: 50 bazillion rocks to throw in the water.The green stuff was slippery! Using the boat to check the crab pots. Almost in the water. Slowly sneaking further into the water… He’s in! Now he’s really in! Look at the boat! And the birds! And the airplane! Everything is a wonder to little Zachy. Got the wet pants off, lets sit in the boat with Tate and not go anywhere! Wrong way buddy. Swing set fun with the cousins. That swing really brings out the blue in your eyes, Zachary! Hold on tight so I don’t blow away Nana! It sure is windy!Special time with Daddy inspecting shells, rocks, and driftwood. One person shy of a family portrait. Zachy would take all his meals off the blueberry bushes if he was allowed to…He would also live outside barefoot if he could. Zachary doesn’t discriminate between the green and blue blueberries. They are all fun to pick and good to eat! Zachy likes eating the berries others pick, but he won’t share the ones he picks. Playing hide and seek with the kitties in the berry bushes. So many to eat, so little time…

Heading home today

We cut our trip short by a day or two and headed straight home from Idaho. We were all pretty exhausted and it was beginning to show. Driving through Idaho, Montana, Idaho again, and into Washington, we were home in 10 hours. There was lots of movie watching and crying, and while we had a fantastic trip, we are very happy to be home.

Through Yellowstone.

We drove into Yellowstone listening to one of those CD audio tours. Very interesting but also very disturbing. There were numerous horror stories of small children, adults, and dogs wandering into the painted pots or hot springs and boiling to death. Even though there were fences everywhere, we did not let Zachary be on the ground anywhere near those death traps! The springs were gorgeous, but stinky. The clear blue water looked inviting, but those pools are 160degrees! Walking the boardwalk along Yellowstone Lake. Zachary wanted to go for a swim in the lake. Or at least go down to the water’s edge and throw rocks in. Away from the hot springs and free to run, run, run! At Old Faithful, he was much more interested in the sandy gravel than the actual geyser. Waiting for the show to begin. We drove the lower half of Yellowstone, through Montana, and into Idaho where we set up camp at Henry’s Lake State Park. Zachy loved playing in the dirt and got filthy dirty! Dirty from head to toes… We found dirt in his socks! Zachary loves the camping lifestyle – being outdoors, watching the fire, listening to birds and airplanes fly overhead.He loved his little chair and getting in and out of it over and over and over again. Marshmallows are tasty!

On the trolley tour learning the local history and seeing landmarks. And playing with guns! No air conditioning on the trolley… Looks like someone needs a haircut. Or is that just an illusion caused by the wind in his hair? The bison horn isn’t as heavy as the gun. Or as fun to play with. Zachy is learning all about beavers this trip thanks to Elena. She thinks he should like them since they have similar teeth…

At the Kinde home

Uncle Dennis and Aunt Joyce have a beautiful home with an amazing view. Elena spent a lot of time downstairs playing Mario Kart with her cousins. Zachary spent a lot of time being held. He was fussing in Great Grandma’s lap until he was given a ball to hold.Another day, another nap! At least he can sleep anywhere…

Wedding nap

It figures… During the ceremony Zachary was running around, but as soon as the dancing starts at the reception, he falls asleep!

At least there were lots of people willing to hold the sleeping baby! Here he is with Aunt CD. He’s awake, but only physically. It’s taking a lot of work to keep him upright and he is not cracking the slightest smile. Please just take me to bed!

Louisville to Denver

Jim went off go-karting, Elena is at the botanical gardens, what should we do now that Zachy’s morning nap is over?

Let’s go on a walk… It sure is hot… Fire plugs are fascinating… We walked to Kohl’s, which is just a couple of blocks from the hotel. The air conditioning was nice and Zachy kept himself busy in their toy section.The Denver Zoo was fascinating! Zachy liked the fish and giant kitties. It was so hot Zachy melted! The giant cup was Zachy’s favorite part of the zoo. Nice and cool to hold, deliciously refreshing to drink! And it was soda so he didn’t have to share with his sister (who doesn’t like carbonated beverages).

Here we are in Colorado!

Daddy had quite the experience driving at 11,000ft in Colorado… He says it feels as though we are pulling a trailer!

We drove through Denver and saw the capitol building and US Mint, but didn’t go in either.

We did go to Hammond’s Candy and took the factory tour. Elena liked watching them make ribbon candy in the special machine that crimped the candy.

Zachy liked putting candy into the basket. He would have taken home the whole store if he could have!

We ended up buying watermelon sticks, caramel covered marshmallows (Mommy’s favorite), and giant lollipops.After the candy store we went to Louisville to check into our hotel and swim in the pool. We saw Grandma and Grandpa!!! Later we went to Aunt Joyce’s house to see all the family. The doggies were staying at a local doggie spa, they were very missed by the kids.

Elena has been a great entertainer for Zachy! She takes him on walks around the campground, sets up “kid town” in the tent (books, toys, and bouncing on the air mattresses), and finds him snacks.

For how well we are all sleeping in the tent, the long days still take their toll!Zachy’s favorite part of the Tracy Aviary was the ducks. He liked watching Elena feed them. He can even say duck now! We’re making sure to get lots of use out of the stroller!

Zachy is buoyant in Utah’s Great Salt Lake! It was much cooler inside the interpretive center on Antelope Island. Zachy let off some energy from being cooped up in the car all day.It’s hot outside! The two week vacation started with a visit to the Cougar Mountain Zoo. It was a company party with face painting, delicious BBQ, and a viewing of the 2 tiger cubs (only 8 weeks old!). Zachy got a tiger painted on his arm. After the zoo, we went to Nana’s house. Nothing like a nice dinner with family and a late night dip in the pool.

Zachary’s first birthday blowout, super hero style

Zachy’s birthday present: a bounce house! When it’s set up inside it’s really loud with the motorized fan always blowing. Zachy was a little wary at first, but Elena jumped right in! Once we threw all the balls and a parent in the bounce house Zachy had a much more enjoyable time. And he did enjoy the slide. Auntie Terry and Walt brought some new sand for the sandbox, just in time for guests. It’s fun to pick up and drop or throw. Apparently having sand in one’s hair and clothes isn’t that big of deal when you’re one… Nothing starts a party like a big bunch of balloons!Of course he had to wear his Superman shirt for the super hero themed party! We celebrated with ice cream sundaes and monster cookies – yum!
4 C. sugar
2 C. (1 lb.) butter
2 lbs. (4 1/2 C.) brown sugar
3 lbs. peanut butter
1 dozen eggs
1 T. vanilla
8 tsp. baking soda
18 C. oatmeal (a 2-lb. 10-oz box)
1 lb. M&M's
1 lb. chocolate chips
Combine first 7 ingredients. Mix very well. Add last 3 ingredients; mix well. Make each cookie about the size of a golf ball; flatten slightly.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes.

All the kids that came to the party got swimsuits – girls had matching striped suits, boys were in pineapple trunks. The kiddie pool was set up for the little ones, we had a slip-n-slide, the water hop scotch, and over 200 water balloons for everyone to enjoy. Zachy’s friends had fun and brought some great gifts. Thank you everyone! Look at all the cute matching swimsuits! What’s a one year old’s party without a keg? Love that Mac & Jack’s! This was actually our first kegger. **No minors were served alcohol in the making of this party.** After everyone left, Elena, Zachy, and Jim enjoyed some simple bounce house fun.

First trip to Remlinger Farms

Mommy’s little trooper rode ALL the rides! Yes, even the roller coaster and the flying pumpkins! The antique cars were probably one of the favorites. We went around the track at least 10 times throughout the day (good thing Elena enjoys this one too). Zachary also enjoyed walking around the stables. He showed no fear around the horses and probably would have crawled under them if he was allowed. He even took a pony ride! What a big cowboy! Buddy Mark was there too. He was more wary around the horses. Maybe he knows something Zachy doesn’t… Zachy was very entertained by the goats. They kept climbing the fences and poking their head through. Some older boys tried to show Zachy how to feed them, but Zachary wanted to try the food for himself (ew). Eventually he got some in the goat’s mouth and smiled as it tickled his finger. Nice goat. Pat pat. Animals are silly, Mom! The rocks around the tractors were a bigger hit than the tractors themselves. Putting the rocks on the tires, through the wheels, on the tractor backs, in the mouth, etc.Another new experience – hay. A little soft, a little prickly, all around fun!Fun to gather.Fun to throw!Elena and Aubrie took their little brothers on the ferris wheel. We had to save the boat ride for last because water is a great temptation for Zachy (he’d just want to get in and swim), and no one wants to hold a wet baby. We were right… Elena had to restrain him for the whole trip.

First haircut

No apron and already he’s crying??? Doesn’t help that he hasn’t napped yet today… It’s much better sitting in Mom’s lap. But we aren’t on the sheep anymore, just a regular chair.What kind of style are we going for? No mullet, no bowl cut, off the ears, and please leave it long on top so it doesn’t stick up again! Well, 3 out of 4 isn’t bad. It did stick up on top again, but that feature gets people oohing and ahhing. The haircut totally changed his appearance to us, not a little baby anymore, he looks like a little kid. Thanks to Elena for taking great pictures!

Ferry trip to Fort Flagler

Zachy had some good z’s at in the barracks. He was the youngest kid in the barracks and everyone was so impressed with how well behaved he was and what a good walker he was becoming. Wow, those must have been some wild dreams that produced a morning style like that… Elena finds the bed-head amusing too.

Good Morning Birthday Boy!

We sang Happy Birthday to Zachary, but he didn't understand what we were doing.

Zachary put on his Birthday Boy shirt and was ready to face the day! It started with dropping Elena off at school (her last day).Then, a trip to the doctor office for a one year wellness visit and shots. Zachary enjoyed the bead toy and opening the cabinets (his usual doctor office activities). But this time he was walking from the toy to the cabinets, not crawling.

He explored the tub of books too (we always have to wait for Dr. Miller). He really liked the sheep page.All done with the exam, now just waiting for shots... Zachary weighed 22lbs 8oz (50th percentile), was 31" long (80th percentile), and had a head circumference of 18 1/2" (70th percentile). Not too proportionate, but he looks good to us! Dr. Miller said he was doing great and was on track and even a little ahead with his motor skills. Now to work on Zachary's eating and sleeping habits... But he's a healthy guy and Dr. Miller was impressed that she's only seen him for wellness visits and not any sicknesses in between.

Zachary had 3 shots in his arms and stopped crying as soon as he was in his mommy's arms.

Tired kiddo was ready for a nap, but Big Sis had an early dismissal and show we had to get to... We wanted to celebrate the day with a nice lunch out, but Zachary was too tired. Good thing Grandma and Grandpa were with us and could take Elena out to celebrate with Mexican tortilla chips and a virgin daiquiri. Zachary had to go home and sleep, sleep, sleep! After the nap there was time to visit the garden and snack on some strawberries. Zachary prefers the wild variety.

He just kept stuffing his face. We celebrated Zachary's first birthday (and Grandma and Grandpa's wedding anniversary since they're on the same day) at Coho Cafe. We had fond memories of celebrating Elena's first birthday at the restaurant and wanted to continue the tradition.

Zachary was very timid about digging into the dessert. He wasn't a big fan of the chocolate cake (more for Mommy and Daddy), but he loved the ice cream. Good thing we're having ice cream at his birthday party instead of cake...

Then it was goodbye hugs and kisses to Grandma and Grandpa and off to bed.

The following day Zachary had his birthday pizza (free from Alfy's Pizza) and sundae cupcakes. Sundae cupcakes are made with melted ice cream and topped with whipped cream, fresh raspberries, and hot fudge sauce. Zachy's favorite part of that was the candle and whipped cream.

And we still have two more birthday celebrations for him later this month. First his huge birthday party with guests and presents, and then a family birthday party with Nana, PopPop, and the rest of our Tri-Cities relatives.

Another day of feeding ducks at Country Village

A beautiful sunny day and a bag of bread to get rid of, we’re off to feed the ducks! Zachy says hi ducks! QUACK!

As soon as they see us with the bag of bread, the ducks and geese start to swarm. The babies weren’t babies anymore, but we could tell them apart because they still had some fluffy down.

Good thing the ducks like to share their bread…

Elena put a handful of bread on the rock by Zachary hoping he’ll help her feed the ducks. He seems content just snacking… The ducks get braver and attempt to get Zachy’s stash. C’mon Zachy, throw the bread!So close he can touch them! But as soon as Zachy makes his move, the duck backs off. Then big sis comes and throws the last of the bread into the pond.

Some firsts

Zachy had his first car wash (at home). He spent his time crawling under the cars, splashing in the bucket of bubbles, and crying. He got put in the grass with his sister and seemed much happier. Here he is having his first Cheeto! Big sis was so proud.
He liked the little picnic which also had blueberries - yum! It will be fun to see him this summer at the strawberry plants and blueberry bushes... Wonder how many green ones he'll eat...

Zachy had his first Croatian cookie (a gift from Aunt Tania). It's really just a hazelnut flavored wafer cookie, but it was a tasty way to experience our heritage.

Ah, the pool by Grandma's house is so refreshing! No matter how tired Zachy is from a day in the woods, he definitely wakes up when we reach the pool! Wave hello to everyone Zachy!

As of last Wednesday, Zachy is a true walker. No more take two steps and sit down, no-sir-e, he is walking meters and meters!

Sure, none of these videos show his skill, but we are really enjoying his walking. So much in fact we don't want to run and get the camera, or bother to hold it straight. Really you should come and see him walk in person, or convince Jim to get out the video camera and make a video like he did for Elena...

Soundbridge

We visited Soundbridge at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. It's a great place for kids to experience musical instruments. Pretty sure tasting the instruments wasn't the experience we were meant to have...

Captain Awesome is 11 months!

Here's Captain Awesome (declared on his shirt) standing on his 11 month birthday.At 11 months, Zachy will answer his hand phone if you say "hello" or "ring ring."
He loves his sister's room (probably wants one of his own...). Here he is taking a break from poking people eyes and poking the dolly's.
Still a crawler, but when he's in shorts outside or on linoleum, he does a hand/foot crawl instead of hand/knee. Is it a gorilla crawl? Bear? Or just plain crazy?

He amuses himself with clicking sounds and raspberries. Look at that drool!

He also likes to do an Indian call or rebel yell.

Too funny! Zachy sees the head nod, but can't get the direction right.

At 11 months, Zachy's top 2 front teeth have started to come in. He looks like a little hippo! He loves going outside and can open the screen door to the deck on his own. When denied the outdoors, he squeals like a pterodactyl. Or is it terror-dactyl?

Zachy is still into kitty food and the dishwasher (will he ever outgrow them?) and loves to play catch. It doesn't matter what size ball or balloon the game is played, it's all good and is accompanied by his constant clapping.

An apple a day...

Lunch time! We took a break from mushrooming to eat lunch. Zachy found an apple in the cooler and thought it looked tasty.
His top front teeth haven't emerged enough yet for him to actually take a bite, but it sure is fun to slobber all over...

And he'll just keep trying until he gets bored and realizes it could also be a ball, and it gets thrown to the ground.

Zachy went mushrooming for morels. He was in the Kelty backpack for most of it, but when Mommy found a big patch he got to sit in the dirt. He even pulled up a morel! And then put it in his mouth! Zachy, you really need to wait for the mushrooms to be cooked... Good thing the sticks are just as much fun to put in his mouth...

Zachy is fascinated by the morels. They are the perfect size for his little hands to grab and throw on the ground. Maybe we need to rethink letting him have access...

Zachy in the locker room getting ready for his first swim lesson. We know he's gonna love them. Yay! Maddie is in his class too! Zachy's favorite is the dolphin kick and playing with the balls and pieces of plastic fruit. He likes being spun in the water and doesn't mind getting completely dunked.
Every time he got out of the water to sit on a mat or the edge of the pool, he got back in as fast as he could. And when Zachy was standing on the platform which made the water waist deep, he'd flop over onto his belly and try to swim around. He just loves the water and is so comfortable floating in the pool with his mom.

Zachary's first Easter! He seemed a little confused, but he is only 10 months old. Elena let him find some eggs (at least the ones that were hiding in his toys). He loved watching Elena run around and find all the eggs.
Then he enjoyed playing with the goodies she let him have. Here he is having fun with some candy (still in the wrapper of course). He had so much fun with this candy bar that it was completely flat and squishy. We decided it was best left in the wrapper...

Elena took some pictures and this one with big smiles is fantastic! Even if PopPop is missing the top of his head!

Buca Di Beppo!

Nana and PopPop are so exciting Zachy couldn't stand to go to sleep until he couldn't last another minute. Which of course was right when food started to arrive... Ooh, Zachy's first taste of hot fudge sundae - thanks for sharing big sis! He may not look excited, but he kept reaching for more!
All that chocolate makes a messy baby. Nana couldn't resist taking a picture of his bath in the big sink. Now we have a clean Michelin/Stay-Puft-Marshmallow baby, with a dimple.

Country Village, Bothell

Ooh, ducks! And with ducks comes bread! Zachy you're supposed to throw the bread to the ducks, not eat it yourself! This was Zachary's first trip to Country Village in Bothell. There were so many things to experience! He loved the toy store. He loved the chickens and ducks. He liked the doves. We didn't see any rabbits or ride the train. He loved the swing. He looked super cute sitting on the alligator. Sorry Zachy, we can't take him home.

Nine months!

Still not old enough to drive a car, but cute, cute, cute!At his nine month wellness visit, he weighed 21lbs 4 oz (65%), 29" tall (75%), and head circumference 18" (55%). Zachary still has little interest in solid foods, but his doctor wasn't worried because he's growing proportionately. She was glad to hear he hasn't been sick at all and said it was probably a result of his love for nursing. Dr. Miller also commented on how happy and strong he was, and on his beautiful skin.

Zachary still loves listening to the Killers and it always quiets him. He likes to sing himself to sleep in somebody's arms, takes 15 to 30 minute power naps in the car or his crib, and doesn't snore as much as he used to.
Zachary is fascinated with Elena and all the silly things she does. He has recently become interested in the kitties and likes to visit them when they are sitting on chairs. Thank goodness s they are (mostly) tolerant to his pulling and noises. When the kitties are on the ground, he uses them like he uses everything else, as a platform to pull himself into a standing position. It's amazing that he has no scratches!
Zachary still loves climbing stairs, but has expanded his curiosity to include electrical outlets and opening cabinets. Cabinets make great banging noises! If a drawer isn't closed all the way, he'll sneak his little fingers in and pull it open, then put all the contents in his mouth and on the floor.
When it comes to the vacuum and dishwasher, Mr. Sneaker is like a cat hearing a can of tuna being opened - can hear it from a mile away and makes a beeline!
We can't wait to see what Zachary does in the next 3 months.

At the River House

We went to visit Grandma and Grandpa at the River House and check out their new construction. They gave us a tour of their new garage with included carport, upper level deck, and "mother-in-law" apartment. Looking good! It was snowing, but we found fun things to do inside. We made "playdoh" but it had to stay white colored since Grandma didn't have any food coloring. Geez Grandma!
Zachary kept putting the dough in his mouth. Good thing it was only flour and salt, but YUCK!

Zachy loves bears!

It was a sunny day so before trekking around the zoo Zachy had to get a sun hat. Little safari dude! Zachy loved all the bears. They probably reminded him of Cody who he loves to watch from the glass door. Both bears and Cody are big and fuzzy with warm brown eyes and have a tendency to pace.

The polar bears were the most active, so Zachy favored them. For a small baby, they were very interesting to observe. Most of the other bears were napping.

Stroller hopping

Zachy got to ride in the stroller/backpack on the path to the butterflies. He just loved this seat and the fact that he could bounce in it. Unfortunately the video of him bouncing didn't turn out. Wheee! Boing! Boing!

The beach and butterflies were very exhausting. Good thing the trip back to Los Altos was almost an hour. It gave Zachy a good chance to rest up before playing with Tania, Edi, and Uncle Al.

Santa Cruz beach pictures

Fun in the sand! This is Zachary's first beach experience. He was really unsure of the sand, but wasn't disgusted by it. He would touch the sand and get his fingers covered, then look closely at the sand on his hands, and if he wasn't stopped quick enough, he'd test the sand with his mouth. Typical.
He really enjoyed the fresh air, excitement from the other kids, and sunshine.

Jim was caught off guard by a wave and got his pants wet. Despite all the babies on the beach and in the ocean without pants, we thought that would be too cold for Zachary. He was fine enjoying the sound and smell of the ocean.

Zachy's first plane trip

Yay! Zachy had his first plane trip at 8 months old! We flew on Virgin America to San Francisco to visit our Vecchiet relatives. The airplane had entertainment screens in every seat so you could play games, listen to music, watch tv or movies. Zachy (and Elena too) really enjoyed pushing buttons on the touch screen and the remote/game controller. Not surprising because it was all lit up and flashing - a baby's dream!We stayed with Tania and Edi for a few days and enjoyed the sun in their backyard. They just adored meeting Zachary and spending time with him. The feeling was mutual, Zachary loved the attention.
It's the boy in the bubble! Yes, he did get stuck.

Our flight home was uneventful, once we got on the plane... We were scheduled to depart at 8:55, but were delayed until 9:40. Then delayed until 10:30. Then delayed until 11:05. Finally at 11:40, we took off. These times are all pm, so the kids were tired. Elena had congestion, so the air pressure change hurt her ears and she cried quite a bit before finally falling asleep. Zachary was asleep before we even boarded the plane.

Zachy has visitors

Oh Gizmo loves Zachy! He thinks Zachy is another little puppy he can boss around and play with. After constant kisses to the cheeks and eyes, Zachy learned to put his head down, close his eyes, and push his arms out in the hopes of discouraging Gizmo. It didn't work that well because Gizmo is persistent... Besides giving love, Gizmo tried to get Zachy to play with him and some toys. Zachy and Gizmo took turns with both puppy and baby toys, but really Gizmo wanted to play fetch. Zachy still needs to work on his throwing skills for that game to be a success... Auntie Tracy was a great source of amusement because she makes silly sounds and faces.
They had fun making each other laugh.

Uncle Brandon is way cool. Zachy's favorite part of Rock Band was all the cords he could pull on and put in his mouth. He wishes he had the opportunity to get his hands (and mouth) on one of those drumsticks...

Korinna came to visit too. Despite her loud personality, Zachy found her shoulder very comforting and took a sweet little nap.

Swing time

Elena used to love every second she could spend in the swing (still does) - Zachy barely cracks a smile. Maybe he was too cold, or maybe he'd just prefer playing in the dirt. No matter his swinging preference, he sure looks cute in his bear hat!

Cheerio

Look at that happy boy! It's almost as if he's posing for the camera here. Zachy can finally eat cheerios without choking! He prefers his table clamp chair to the high chair, and he will seat and eat his cheerios. Sure, more than half end up on the floor, but Rainey likes cheerios too. When Morel and Gizmo visited, they quickly found the cheerio goldmine sitting under Zachy. Cheerios are great because they are portable and not too messy.

Silly boy has a cheerio chin! We've also found cheerios stuck to Rainey's head and back.
